Artist Research - Alec Soth

Sleeping by the Mississippi is an interesting and thought provoking series by contemporary documentary photographer Alec Soth, who comprises the use of portraiture and still life images to portray how America is depicted along the shores of the Mississippi river. Neglected scenes are captured with incredible detail through the use of large format equipment and this particular image is interestingly divided into a 50/50 frame, through the line created by the river bank and it's trees, separating the river & sky, however the main subject of the image, the boat is faced at an angle that ensures the bank appears to slope downwards to the right of the frame.
