Artist Research - Martin Parr

Martin Parr's early work in the West Yorkshire of Hebden Bridge is produced in a similar fashion at a similar time to the previously seen series by David Hurn, shot on Black & White and is largely a documentation of the social aspects of life within this small industrial town of the North, miles away from his more recent and well known images from the seaside towns across the southern coast, with the frame filled with vibrance & colour.

This particular image displays the simplicity of composition in which Parr approached documenting his newly adopted home in north, the large hill in the background is faced straight on, with a medium focal length used to keep a balanced perspective of the scene across the frame, as the hill in itself provides the frame to be divided into three fairly even sections of sky, hill, and foreground. Exposed for highlights as the details of the clouds can be seen, as can shadows cast by the farmed sheep and the steepness of the hill to the right.
